LITTLE WHITE LIE

SONJA HAYNES STONE CENTER FOR BLACK CULTURE AND HISTORY, CHAPEL HILL

THURSDAY, SEPT. 3

Home is where the heart is, but where does identity live? That's the question in Little White Lie, which kicks off this year's Diaspora Festival of Black and Independent Film at UNC-Chapel Hill. Lacey Schwartz's documentary tells her story of growing up in a Jewish household in Woodstock, New York. Despite the strength of her family unit, Schwartz stands out for her dark skin, which she is told came from a Sicilian grandfather. But after her parents suddenly separate, she discovers that her biological father is a black man with whom her mother had an affair. At age 18, Schwartz begins a journey of self-discovery and reckoning with the nature of blackness. The festival continues with The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution (Sept. 8), Full Frame Grand Jury Award winner (T)ERROR (Sept. 10) and For the Cause (Sept. 24). Visit the Stone Center's website to see the full schedule and reserve free tickets. 7 p.m., free with RSVP, 150 South Road, Chapel Hill, 919-962-9001, www.stonecenter.unc.edu.Brian Howe
