Re: “Governor's School blues

As a parent of a rising Junior who plans to apply to the 2012 session, I am appalled that, thanks to the GOP, Governor's School is on the chopping block. My son goes to a rural mountain High School where football and loud cars rule, smart kids are ridiculed, and even his own guidance counselor accuses him of being a "point chaser" while the Principal sits in silent agreement--simply because he wants to find a challenging class schedule. I have read online negative comments about GS, stating that it benefits teens who already have every advantage and are going to succeed anyway. Yes, as a parent I have tried to give my child every opportunity--but there are some that no amount of dedication can provide--such as the opportunity to spend six weeks with a wonderful diversity of teens who do share one thing in common--the thirst for that delightful combination of education and imagination that ignites and inspires young bright minds. And in an environment that instills confidence and pride in the gifts of the mind. Yes,there are tons of summer programs out there for the AG crowd--that is the AG crowd with wealthy parents, which we are not. This is what sets Governor's School apart--a rare chance for ALL gifted kids, not just the ones with rich parents--to learn in an accelerated, stimulating environment--which may be why the GOP wants to dump it. Perhaps it is simply another attack on the middle class, which, under the guise of eliminating "elitism'" is actually attempting to PROTECT the elite HAVES by seeking to eliminate opportunities for the Have-Nots. After all, if the school is shut down, who is going to be hurt? The tax-paying parents and students who cannot afford elite summer programs like TIP, etc. PLEASE speak out and save this school that, through our tax dollars, seeks to level the playing ground for ALL gifted students- regardless of socioeconomic status!!
