Lisa Jolley

When: Mon., Dec. 31 2012
Price: free

"I've always hated cabaret," admits actor and cabaret artist Lisa Jolley. "To me, it always seemed so self-indulgent: 'And then I went through such-and-such in my life, and it's best represented in this ... song.'" With that in mind, Jolley devised an "anti-cabaret" for her first New York show at Don't Tell Mama. It depended upon songs composed, in real time, about her audience. The name: Jolley on the Spot.

She's got other plans for her 10 p.m. performance tonight for First Night Raleigh. A catalog of some of the lengths she's gone to get some of her gigs on Broadway and in regional theater, it sounds like a showbiz memoir with a twist. Auditions are all about getting noticed, of course; here she'll relive (and re-sing) some of the strategies she used, including what she delicately calls "my less-than-orthodox audition material."

The show is free with your admission to First Night Raleigh.—Byron Woods
