Lisa Creed: Journey

When: Thu., Sept. 13, 5:30-8 p.m. 2018
Price: free

Durham artist Lisa Creed lived in Sweden for a year when she was a child. Fifty-five years later, she returned, rediscovering the magic of Scandinavian landscapes and design aesthetics both medieval and modern, but now armed with an adult's insight. She also made her first visit to Iceland. "Back home in my studio, I studied my own work with fresh eyes," she writes. "I saw Viking designs, Scandinavian colors and patterns, and runestone markings everywhere in my paintings." Likewise, she perceived Nordic design tropes in her assemblages. Isn't it amazing what the smallest childhood experience can plant in us forever? These paintings and assemblages are the focus of Journey, Creed's Horse & Buggy exhibit, which remains on view through September 27 after this reception. —Brian Howe
