Liquid Asylum, GNØER

When: Sun., May 31, 9 p.m. 2015
If the letters in the band name “GNØER” look familiar, the band’s other characters—that is, the members—should, too. The new project from Raleigh’s longtime guitar-less pop-rock trio Goner, GNØER drops the drum kit, using sequencers and synthesizers to build a futuristically retro backdrop for Scott Phillips’ detail-rich narratives. This is their live debut, and, as such, their recorded output remains slim. But their first finished number, “Tonight’s the Word,” is excellent, employing the same sense of melodic grandeur and musical bravado that long made Goner so lovable but with an altered instrumental arsenal. —Grayson Haver Currin
