Director Steve James' extraordinary documentary on Roger Ebert is more than just a biographical profile of the man who would become America's most popular and influential film critic. It's a film about living well and dying well, about the craft of writing and the art of cinema. Framed by painfully intimate scenes of Ebert's final months fighting cancer, the film has the rhythms of a rowdy wake as friends and family eulogize and dish out some great stories. Surprisingly, it's the story of Ebert's late-in-life love affair with his wife Chaz that resonates in the end. Highly recommended.
