Re: “Getting a label deal is important, but it's not the only route to success

I read the DTH article, and it is a pretty unfortunate one for a band that has been working as hard as Hammer has for the past four years. If you'd ever had the pleasure of interacting with them, you'd know they are sweethearts who dream of nothing else but music and would never want to publicly criticise their local scene. Unfortunately, frustrations that every aspiring band has about the music business went public, but they would never intend to hurt themselves, churchkey, or the music community they are so grateful to be a part of (I've heard them praise the scene after hopscotch, troika, and even after their recent return from the UK - there's no place like it). Maybe Hammer has learned a lesson in tact when it comes to dealing with the press, but can we also take into account that simple questions like, "What labels did you shop your record to?" and "what did they say?" and "what's your DREAM five year plan?" (to a band that really loves Phish) can be narrowly focused and angled to make a few boys - who genuinely love music and the dream of making a living from it - look like assholes. It's a narrow and misrepresentative article of the bunch, i'm sure they are incredibly regretful about their off-the-record comments. Frustration doesn't look good in the press, but it undoubtedly comes with the music business territory, and these guys are just eager to find their place in it.
