Lettuce, Marvel Years

When: Wed., Nov. 4, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $20-$25
Lettuce the vegetable can be bland. Lettuce, the Boston-via-Brooklyn funk band, is anything but. They pound out contemporary, danceable music that borrows from their influences but is never beholden to them. Consider, “Phyllis,” the lead single from the septet’s upcoming Crush. The glassy reverb on the wah-heavy guitar lines suggests a noir atmosphere. Bright and brassy retro-soul horns splash over bouncy hip-hop rhythms. Dubstep-influenced bass swells hit inside a gritty R&B breakdown. Though the band’s perhaps better known for wild, high-energy jam rock, “Phyllis” shows that Lettuce can pull off slick, deep composition, too. —Patrick Wall
