Comedy, Romance

The presence of the aging but still luminous Vanessa Redgrave is all that spares this sun-bathed trifle from the wasteland of the Lifetime Movie Network. While on vacation in Verona, frustrated fiancée Sophie (the ubiquitous Amanda Seyfried) uncovers a decades-old letter written to Shakespeare's Juliet and, following local tradition, left along the wall of the lover's supposed courtyard in Verona. Sophie writes a response to the letter's author, the now-elderly Claire (Redgrave), which inspires her and hunky English grandson, Charlie (Matt Damon clone Chris Egan), to hop a flight to Italy and search out Claire's long-lost teenage beloved. Frankly, anyone with a minimal level of cognition can surmise the remainder of this film's plot based solely on the preceding two sentences. That realization sets in early for the viewer, making all the obligatory tropes of vineyards, rugged men on horseback and a wedding denouement that much more difficult to endure. Adding insult to inanity is the utter waste of Gael Garca Bernal in the role of the boyfriend so unequivocally self-centered—Why did Sophie agree to marry him in first place?—it justifies Sophie's eventually wayward eye.
