Let's Go To France

Let's Go to France

When: Fri., July 16, 9 p.m. 2010

Looking to avoid the barrage of blockbuster banality this summer? Durham Cinematheque offers an alternative for those bored by teenage girls swooning over vampires and werewolves. Let's Go to France is a spliced-together 16mm film that contains archival footage of Paris streets, poets, movie stars and farms, plus snippets from old Parisian films including a rare glimpse of Marcel Duchamp's 1926 avant-garde film Anemic Cinema. Tom Whiteside, founder and director of Durham Cinematheque, has been creating and curating these shows since 1991. He enjoys screening strange and experimental films that enliven spirited conversations about the medium. "If people enjoy the show as a whole but are still scratching their heads at a particular part, that's fine with me," said Whiteside. "These shows are a bit crazy, but it's all in fun." The screening begins at dark (about 9 p.m.) and is free, but a donation hat will be passed around "vigorously." —Belem Destefani
