Let the Right One In

When: Sun., Oct. 14 2012
Price: $20 (season ticket)

Tomas Alfredson's 2008 film adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel proves that when it comes to vampires, the Swedes have us beat. Utilizing Sweden's wintry landscape and the faded look of a 1980s setting to eerie effect, Let the Right One In chronicles a genuinely moving tale of first love between a bullied, troubled child (Kåre Hedebrant) and the girl who moves in next door (Lina Leandersson) who isn't exactly a girl (it's complicated and explained more in the book). The U.S. remake Let Me In doesn't disgrace its source material, but the original is tough to beat for its beautiful cinematography, tensely staged scenes and superb performances from the young actors. You just want those crazy kids to be together, even though you know it ain't going to end well for them in the long run. It's a tale that makes Twilight look like ... well, Twilight. The screening is part of the 2012-13 Cinema Inc. series and is available as part of a $20 season pass. —Zack Smith
