Leonard Rogoff

When: Tue., May 4, 7 p.m. 2010

Shalom, y'all. Much ink (and manufactured tchotchkes) has been devoted to the uniqueness of the chosen tribe settling in the South. How does one reconcile keeping kosher in a place where making and eating barbecue counts as a religious experience? Rogoff sheds some light on the subject in his new book, Down Home: Jewish Life in North Carolina. The man knows what he's talking about: He's the president of the Southern Jewish Historical Society and the historian for Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina. In his latest book, he explores the American Jewish experience (in particular, that of the Southern Jew) and relationships between Jews and African-Americans. —Sarah Ewald
