Reminiscent of dollar store animated films featuring stories that have fallen into public domain, the most noteworthy aspect of Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return is that it is being released into theaters at all. Eschewing the superior works of L. Frank Baum in favor of his great-grandson Roger Stanton Baum's series of books on Oz, we find Dorothy (Lea Michele of TV's Glee) being whisked back to Oz to save her friends from the villainous Jester (voiced by comedic legend Martin Short). The only thing saving Return from the dreaded bomb rating is Short's vocal gymnastics as the evil would-be ruler of Oz. During the long stretches in which Short leaves the film, we are left to rely on the mediocre direction and unimaginative script to entertain us. It fails miserably.
