LAVERNE COX

THURSDAY, SEPT. 24, DURHAM

B.N. DUKE AUDITORIUM AT N.C. CENTRAL UNIVERSITY—Netflix series Orange Is the New Black made a splash in 2013 with its dramatized look at life in a women's prison. The secondary characters quickly revealed themselves to be more compelling than the whiny lead. Among them is Sophia, a transgender hairstylist played by trans actress Laverne Cox. Cox rightfully earned praise for her sharp portrayal. In 2014, she became the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy for acting. Her feats of excellence extend beyond the screen: She has leveraged her spotlight to advocate for the rights of trans communities and people of color. Cox is a phenomenal woman with lots to say, and you'll want to hang on every word of her story when she opens the Lyceum Series at N.C. Central University this week. 7 p.m., free, 1851 Fayetteville Road, Durham, 919-530-6932, www.nccu.edu —Allison Hussey
