Last Year at Marienbad

When: Fri., Jan. 13, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5 ($3.50 for members)

Those looking for a tense, tightly plotted piece of cinema ... should probably not attend this screening of Alain Resnais' 1961 groundbreaker. Indeed, the whole movie revolves around whether or not something happened, or whether anything in the film does happen. Essentially, there's this fancy chateau, and this lady meets this fellow who says he had a fling with her the previous year, and they arranged to meet again this year, only she doesn't really remember any of it, and he occasionally corrects his detailed account. Also, there's a bizarre game involving matchsticks and a lot of organ music. Nothing really gets resolved, but it's all a metaphor for rebelling against authority, or the subjective nature of reality, or the ways in which artists try to shape the world around them, or something. Those who love it consider it one of their favorite films, a dryly existential tale that lures you in with its hypnotically slow pace and gorgeous visuals. Those who don't ... well, you can always see Mission: Impossible at the IMAX. He hangs off a building by his fingers! Otherwise, head to the museum at 8 p.m. for the show. Independent contributor Laura Boyes is the programmer of the museum's film series. —Zack Smith
