Japanese playwright Naomi Iizuka combines concepts of Japanese Noh theater with Appalachian ghost mythology in this 2000 play, which is concerned with issues of guilt and tragedies of the past. In a rural North Carolina town, the characters directly address the audience about the disappearance of a young girl five years ago. In nonchronological scenes, we see how these events have affected the characters from different points of view, including the girl herself, who recounts what happened to her and her supernatural revenge. The ghostly elements and shifted chronology are drawn from the Noh tradition of storytelling, contrasted with the more realistic elements of the modern mountain backdrop. See what happens when cultures clash—or, rather, merge—in this new staging by One Song Productions. —Zack Smith
