Drama

The first disappointment of acclaimed director Jason Reitman's career is slightly redeemed by Josh Brolin's strong turn as an escaped convict who takes a single mom (Kate Winslet) and her son (Changeling's Gattlin Griffith) hostage. Terror turns into something like love and hasty plans are made to make this a longer relationship than originally planned. Winslet is one of the more talented actresses of her generation, but her performance here is downright embarrassing; nervous tics and wide-eyed emoting are poor substitutes for characterization.
