Admit it, you like to have your heart broken. That sweet suffering, although agonizing, is also a reminder of the momentary preciousness of life. It's why we're attracted to stories like Puccini's La Bohème, which the North Carolina Opera presents at Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh. Devil-may-care starving artists in 1830s Paris decide to blow their last few francs on a hot night in the Latin Quarter, triggering passion in all directions among their crew. If it sounds a bit like Rent, that's because Rent was based upon this entertaining opera.

Sung in Italian with English supertitles, the opera will be conducted by Robert Moody of the Winston-Salem Symphony. Soprano Angela Fout and tenor Eric Barry sing leads. —Chris Vitiello
