Kurt Vile & the Violators, Purling Hiss

When: Wed., Oct. 20, 9:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $9-11

The music of Philadelphia songwriter Kurt Vile is a perfect mix of slacker insouciance and expert arrangement, with winding guitar lines and well-considered melodies enfolded in engineer-may-care shrouds. In a landscape strewn with chillwave and garage band obsolescence, Vile is the rare refined player and writer who slouches by choice. Vile approaches lyrics through a dim kaleidoscope, with a mix of romanticism, realism and cynicism cut by the silly thoughts that spill out of his head. His hazy sprawls, then, are as appealing as they are obfuscated, and he's among the most promising, prolific bandleaders in Amerindie right now. —Grayson Currin
