Kurt Elling Quintet: Passion World: Songs of Love & Loss

When: Fri., Feb. 13, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $10-$48
Yes, Kurt Elling is touring ahead of an album called Passion World, and yes, it’s the day before Valentine’s Day. If that’s not enough of a sell, the baritone Elling has actual cachet in the jazz world, unlike some of his cheesier American-songbook-touting peers. He’s won numerous DownBeat polls during the past decade. Elling trends toward the quirky, transforming the traditional songbook with unusual juxtapositions and contexts; as such, Passion World gathers love songs from around the globe. His arrangements are sharp, his quintet gifted. Most of all, his vocal flights are extravagant but grounded in the tunes he interprets. —Will Robin
