Re: “Locks and the black woman

April 9, 2007. I have just read your article and wanted to register my comments. I am a Black American male, with locks (brotherlocks actually) that reach past my shoulders. In 2001 I decided to stop using relaxers on my hair - yes brothers are guilty of it as well - and started sporting a more natural look. In late 2001, I got brotherlocks, and it has done wonders not only for my self love, but I am viewed now not as someone who wants to "fit-in", but as someone that "stands-out". The distinction may be small to some, but it is HUGE to me. I get to be my beautiful self in all the glory that God has given me, and I live my life being grateful that I am American and Black. Thank you for such a thoughtful and well written article. Kristian Alexis Perry, San Francisco
