Krispy Kreme Challenge

When: Sat., Feb. 5, 8:30 a.m. 2011

If you've never seen the gorge-fest up close, this is a must. To compete in the race, runners must make it from N.C. State's Bell Tower to the Krispy Kreme store on Peace Street (a distance of two miles), scarf down a dozen glazed doughnuts and then trudge back to the Bell Tower, all within an hour. If you're wondering how runners keep it all down, the answer is, they don't. Take it from someone who volunteered last year; by the time runners make it to the water station after the Krispy Kreme stop, the doughnuts are making an unwelcome reappearance on the street. Take into account that more than 7,000 people usually compete in this race, and you can understand why ESPN chose to feature it in one of its "bizarre sports" segments. Although it's too late to register as a runner, officials welcome spectators along the sidelines to cheer on the regurgitating masses. All proceeds from the race benefit the N.C. Children's Hospital. See the racers anywhere between the Bell Tower and the Krispy Kreme on Peace Street at 8:30 a.m. —Lauren Shute
