There’s a hitch in Jonah Furman’s singing voice that makes him sound super nervous, even as his band unleashes their most confident alt-rock moves. The Boston group’s new record, A Distant Fist Unclenching, sounds much more vivid and powerful than their previous efforts, but its added punch still centers around lyrics that spill out, as if from a cut vein of pure anxiety: “God grant me strength to know what is a brain problem and what is just me,” he offers in a typically relatable plea. Oversharing has earned them a small but devoted fan cult. —Jeff Klingman
