Action/Adventure, Romance

J, a divinely handsome Las Vegas hustler (Hrithik Roshan) is bewitched by Natasha, a sadistic gangster's fiancée (Mexican telenovela beauty Barbara Mori). They share fleeting moments of happiness before a deadly pursuit begins. Kites is crafted to be an international crossover, and it received indulgent US reviews, an NPR feature and a spot in the box office Top 10. This week brings the release of a 90-minute English version recut by Rush Hour's Brent Ratner, shorn of songs and, presumably, character development. In a week when Glee graces the cover of Entertainment Weekly, must Hrithik et al. court global audiences with Tarentino-esque brutality? In this original version, the lead couple charm, Hrithik dances up a storm in his one number and the production is slick and gorgeous. "Money can buy you happiness—if you know where to shop" one character is cautioned. So, why must the universal cinematic language be bloodshed, when clearly, Hrithik was made for love?
