Kisses, And How!

When: Tue., July 23, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $8-10

The band name Kisses suggests the most cloying variant of twee pop, but there's actually depth to the retro stylings of this California duo. Their new disc Kids in L.A., for instance, casts twilit shadows across pastel drum machines and synth hues. "Don't be so cynical," Jesse Kivel sings, likely to himself, in "At the Pool." Ignore the ridiculous name and instead focus on the nervous tics behind such deceptively smooth dance-pop. The feeling is indrawn and darkly atmospheric, like late '90s trip-hop built with a disco toolkit. And How! opens. —Corbie Hill
