Kirk Whalum

When: Fri., July 9, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $38.50–$48.50.

If the only thing you know of Kirk Whalum is his righteously '80s sax solo on Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You," then you're missing a lot. This smooth jazz saxophonist and songwriter has worked with everyone from Babyface and Yolanda Adams to Barbra Streisand and Luther Vandross and racked up eight Grammy nominations and two Stellar Gospel Music Awards for his own work, too. His latest release, The Gospel According to Jazz: Chapter III, marries his love of gospel with his time-honed jazz chops, creating a compelling and inspired call to worship. —Ashley Melzer
