Kings Dog Show

When: Fri., Dec. 29, 8:30 p.m. 2017
Price: $8

My knowledge of dog shows is limited to Christopher Guest's mockumentary Best in Show. Luckily, Kings' annual puppy pageant sounds like it's in a similarly satirical vein. Fifteen dogs and their human captors will strut their stuff in front of a live audience and a panel of judges, who will hopefully break out their best Fred Willard impersonations. Based on personality, looks, life story, and one trick (it can be legit or stupid), one furry friend will be crowned the top dog of Raleigh. Kings stresses that this is just for fun and open to all dogs, from the mangiest mongrel to the most pedigreed princess. There will be prizes for the top three, and proceeds go to the SPCA of Wake County. Finally, a little housekeeping: no one under eighteen allowed (no humans, anyway), no random Rovers on the day of the show (you have to enter your dog beforehand)—and hey, bring a poo bag, would you? —Brian Howe
