King Mez

When: Sat., April 19, 8 p.m. 2014

Raleigh emcee King Mez has long been interested in presenting his career as more of an exhibit of sophisticated stylistic choices, not mere rap. You can hear it in the way he rhymes, the way he talks about his influences and family and the way he even wears his clothes. NC's hip-hop heir apparent has previously teamed with chic Triangle clothiers like Thrill City and Raleigh Denim, the latter of which hosted a recent listening party for King Mez's highly anticipated sophomore project, Long Live The King, in their downtown curatory. The album debuted last Thursday on the website of a leading hip-hop and lifestyle publication, Complex Magazine. And why wouldn't it? His new Warner/Chappell publishing deal might have given him some major leverage, but his creative freedom depends on a series of savvy decisions. A hometown rap show in a contemporary art museum? Sounds swanky enough to me. —Eric Tullis
