Kevn Kinney Band, Lynn Blakey & Ecki Heins

When: Wed., Feb. 22, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $10-15

Kevn Kinney's music is too broad for typical tags: His solo work explores moody, rustic folk ballads that dramatize the tangled strands of self-reliance, self-medication and self-loathing against an encroaching twilight. His band material, most notably with Drivin' N' Cryin, mines some of the same territory but mixes in chunky Southern rock. Kinney is equally suited to either style, but his versatility has bamboozled those tasked with marketing him during the last 25 years. And he cares? The ever-adventurous artist just finished A Good Country Mile with Anton Fier and the Golden Palominos, which rocks nearly as hard as a DNC album. His band for this show includes not only Fier but former Raleigh guitarist Audley Freed (whose credits include tours with the Black Crowes and the Dixie Chicks) and Kinney's Drivin' N' Cryin' bandmate Tim Nielsen on bass. Lynn Blakey and Ecki Heins open. —Chris Parker
