Kevin Wilson

When: Thu., Aug. 25, 7:30 p.m. 2011

If you thought you had it bad when your parents dressed you and your siblings in matching outfits, or if you were ever compelled to submit to, you still have nothing on the Fang family. At least your parents didn't ask you to raise money for your fake sick dog by playing instruments poorly, and then provoke the crowd to boo you. And your parents didn't then place a film recording of that humiliation in a museum for strangers to contemplate as "art."

In Kevin Wilson's The Family Fang, Caleb and Camille Fang are performance artists who will sacrifice anything for their art, including their children's emotional well-being. After a lifetime of struggling with performance versus reality, their children, Annie and Buster, are having trouble finding their sense of self in adulthood. They feel guilt over manipulating the public to believe that an event is authentic when it's staged, and when they return home, they find they can no longer discern what is real in their parents' lives, which proves problematic when a horrific event occurs. Wilson will read from the book at 7:30 p.m. —Lauren Taylor Shute
