Kevin Gates

When: Wed., Nov. 18, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $25
By no means a prince, the frog-throated Baton Rouge emcee Kevin Gates came up on that independent grind, collecting cosigns from the likes of Boosie and Lil Wayne until The Luca Brasi Story mixtape nudged him into the spotlight. Brutally honest and honestly a brute, Gates is an unlikely modern rap star and one of the genre’s most genuine of articles. He crafts credible street-level bangers imbued with a sort of trap melancholy, replete with earnest and melodic vocal hooks. Still, Gates’ 2015 has proven a vexing one for fans, with a handful of good singles marred by self-destructive tendencies ranging from incest defenses on Instagram to violence against women at his own concerts. The long road to his first proper album, Islah, just got a little bit longer, as it’s been pushed back to January. This current tour seeks to fight it from flopping. —Gary Suarez
