Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock

When: Sun., June 23, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $30-65

Rap careers don't happen like this anymore: A youthful, word-happy MC—occupying a Kanye-like niche wherein he is a conflicted, searching dude who can be a knucklehead but ultimately has a good head on his shoulders—gets a big deal co-sign by West Coast royalty Dr. Dre while building buzz independently with his Wu Tang-like Black Hippy Crew (Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, ScHoolboy Q). He jumps to the mainstream with an uncompromising concept-album debut, good kid, m.A.A.d city, and doesn't sacrifice his idiosyncrasies. You won't find many die-hards who prefer his earliest, less available work. The more eyes that are on Kendrick Lamar, the more ambitious he seems to get. He raps knotty lyrics about the pitfalls of street violence with an affecting dose of empathy and understanding. His hit "Swimming Pools," an anti-binge-drinking rap, brings with it a perverse thrill when heard in places where, well, people are binge-drinking. His helium-voiced pitter-patter makes for strangely catchy hooks. —Brandon Soderberg
