Kendra Foster

When: Thu., Sept. 3, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $15-$20
In late June, Kendra Foster, D’Angelo’s Black Messiah co-writer and background singer, announced that Atlanta vocalist Joi Gilliam would replace her in D’Angelo’s touring band, The Vanguard. Before their run, Foster had spent several years as a touring member of George Clinton’s P-Funk All Stars band, so perhaps she had grown tired of the touring life and wished to return to her solo career as an artist and songwriter. In April, Art of Cool Fest treated Durham to a tease of Foster’s talent during a free daytime performance. This month, AOCF and 9th Wonder bring her back to the Triangle for a full concert of soulful charms. —Allison Hussey
