Katharine Whalen's Parlour Folk Troupe

When: Sat., May 15, 6 p.m. 2010
Price: free

Hearing an early Squirrel Nut Zippers cut on community radio recently reminded me just how beautifully Katharine Whalen's vocals—"Blossom Dearie meets Billie Holiday" went one description way back when—worked at the center of the Zippers' yesteryear high jinks. But as Whalen's genre-proof Dirty Little Secret album and her quirk-free take on Michael Kelsh's country song "Restlessness" for the Songs for Sixty Five Roses compilation revealed, her voice is both striking and adaptable. With her latest venture, she lets that wonderful instrument loose on new originals, as well as songs by Nick Lowe, Stephin Merritt and The Carter Family. —Rick Cornell
