Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Funkuponya

When: Thu., June 20, 8:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $18-27

Karl Denson put his Tiny Universe on hiatus through the middle of last decade, allowing the saxophonist, flutist and vocalist even more time to venture in new directions. Along with his trio and The Greyboy Allstars, the broad-minded Denson has worked with Lenny Kravitz, Stanton Moore, Slightly Stoopid, and Miles Davis sidemen Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette. Not surprisingly, then, the ensemble's latest—2009's Brother's Keeper—broadens its palette beyond the jammy, jazzy funk grooves of earlier efforts, incorporating classic soul and reggae and including three songs written or co-written by Switchfoot's Jon Foreman. Funkuponya opens. —Spencer Griffith
