Both of these Jamaican-born artists have adopted Afrocentric names. Kabaka Pyramid, aka Keron Salmon, is a conscious rapper blending the hip-hop he came to love in high school with dancehall and reggae. Vocalist Iba MaHr, aka Mario Greaves, studied computers and management in college, but he diverted his career into songwriting and performing what he terms modern-day “redemption songs.” —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
