Re: “Use of gassing challenged

PUPPIES AVAILABLE - BLADEN COUNTY TO GAS KILL THESE PUPS & DOGS Location: Elizabethtown (NC) Date: Jul-20-08 Dear Congressman Mike McIntyre: Note: It has also been reported from previous visitors and adopters that 1) When they visited the Bladen County NC Animal Shelter, a pile of Gassed puppies were piled on the floor in the hall 2) There were no food or water bowls in some cages (possibly preparing dogs for Gassing 3) Adopted dogs were severely dehydrated - The reason is during the Gas Killing process, dogs release their bowls, urinate and vomit -If the shelter witholds water & food, it makes for less clean-up, after they are Gassed. 4) Dogs are routinely moved with an 8 foot Rabies Snare Pole (unnecessary) and heavy dogs are choked (from their heavy body weight) as they are being lifted into truck crates (to go to the GAS CHAMBER) by their neck with this pole. -Inhumane way to treat pets, dogs & puppies that are not aggressive! Don't these shelter employees have any humanity? GOD! RE: Animal shelter gassing pets - not calling back prospective adopters. Bladen County Animal Shelter 506 Smith Circle Elizabethtown, NC. 28377 Bladen County Animal Shelter put out a plea (which appears below) to save pets from their GAS chamber. They gas wonderful prospective dogs & puppies up to 2x weekly. Gas Kill is a very inhumane way of euthanasia. animals vomit, wretch, release their bowls, urinate, cry/scream, and desperately scratch on walls and the door trying to escape during the death process. Even the American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA) says it's an outdated and inhumane method. It is done because it is cheap and is not "hands on". THE BOTTOM LINE: GAS KILLING PETS IS CRUEL! I (as a volunteer who heard about their plight) have put up ads myself in Craigslist and Kiiji (free newspapers) asking for people in the DC area to adopt these dogs and save them from the gas chamber every FRI am. There are many interested people, but the interested persons say they continuously call SYLVIA , call the shelter, and e-mail for several days without getting a response. 910-876-0539 Sylvia 910-862-6918 Shelter (open 8:30am - 11;00am) Email: mailto:Bladenpets@yahoo.com I myself have called and emailed, but every time I try to call, I get an answering machine. this has been going on for 10 days, while these pets are being killed with interested parties awaiting information. I got one return call late last night from Sylvia saying she was on vacation, but subsequent calls today, always go to a voice mail - she is overwhelmed. In addition, with shelter hours of 8:30am - 11:00 am (2 1/2 hours) who in the world can get there during these restricted times? WHY WOULD YOU GAS PUPPIES AND DOGS ON FRIDAY MORNING BEFORE PEOPLE CAN SEE THEM ON THE WEEKEND? -Most people can only go on the weekend to adopt!!! I also put up an ad for people coming North to transport these pets for free. I have interested people but they are not getting calls returned!!! I am sure this is NOT Sylvia's fault. This shelter probably has very limited staffing. The problem is the shelter needs MORE STAFFING so callers get answers about adopting pets! WHY DOESN'T THE SHELTER HIRE MORE VOLUNTEERS??? - THERE ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE I AM SURE WHO WOULD GLADLY HELP 1 DAY A WEEK! - JUST ADVERTISE ON CRAIGSLIST FOR FREE! >>>This is horrible and a disgrace to the State of North Carolina, and it's good people.<<< EVERYONE: Please contact North Carolina Congressman Mike MyIntyre's office to get answers and to ask for additional staffing to assist in getting information to prospective adopters, - AND TO STOP USING GAS-KILL AS A METHOD OF EUTHANASIA FOR PETS! North Carolina Congressman Mike McIntyre Washington telephone number: 202-225-2731 Leo Schmid - Animal issues Legislative Assistant NC Congressman Mike McIntyre's Office 201-225-2731 leoschmid@mail.house.gov Sincerely, A very concerned animal lover STOP THIS UNNECESSARY SUFFERING! MR MCINTYRE: WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU VISITED BLADEN COUNTY'S ANIMAL SHELTER AND WITNESSES FIRSTHAND - YOUR COUNTY'S PETS BEING GASSED? PLEASE COPY THIS, POST AT YOUR OFFICE AND FORWARD TO YOUR FRIENDS! Also, see this OTHER Gas Kill shelter (Same killing schedule every Friday morning. Sometimes 2x weekly): PLEASE PLEASE HELP THIS SHELTER IF YOU CAN THIS IS SO URGENT!! This is such a sad situation and Bladen County Animal Control really needs the help of the community right now. Due to unforseen circumstances, they have had to stop transporting dogs up north to folks who wanted to adopt our shelter friends. Not sure when this will start up again or if it will for that matter but in the mean time, many dogs and cats are dieing at least twice a week at this gas shelter. They simply do not have the room for all the companions that are brought in weekly. Currently they have MANY puppies and kittens that didn't ask to be brought into this world but due to irresponsible owners they may never see tomorrow! This is a desperate plea for anyone who can help save lives at this shelter. If your a rescue and think you may be able to help us, we would love to hear from YOU!! If you can sponsor a dog, adopt or foster with the intent to get the dog adopted on your own, PLEASE call us, we are begging for help, actually we are begging for our four legged friends! If you can be a "Doggie or Kittie Angel" PLEASE CALL SILVIA AT 910-876-0539 FOR MORE DETAILS AND GOD BLESS YOU!! Shelter Dogs Speak is a place for everyone to come together and spill the beans. People have had to swallow animal shelter horrors in North Carolina for decades. This blog is a portal into the world of high "catch and kill" animal sheltering. I applaud your comment. I intend to keep exposing rotten to the core county governments who turn their heads the other way...instead of helping the dying shelter animals. Do you know when the gas chamber was last inspected at this shelter? I wrote the Dept. of Agriculture. Following is the answer the Dept of Agriculture gave me. Very sad. No one really cares how the gas chamber is works. No one bothers to inspect it. Gassing is horrible and below is the answer from the Dept. of Agriculture. I am burning. This gas chamber must be exposed with photos and all pertinent information. REPLY FROM DEPT OF AGRICULTURE HERE" Jane. There is no* euthanasia rules* at this time. The new rules have been submitted and are at this current time with the Rules and Review Commission. If and when the rules are passed then the shelters will be regulated by the State and have to conform to what you read at the web site. But as of now there is no set rules in place. In reference to the prodigal and procedures for Bladen Co Animal Control you will have to check with the County to answer those questions. If any other concerns please let us know. Thank You
