Justin Tornow/l No. 22 / Penumbra

When: Thu., Feb. 1, 7 p.m. 2018
Price: free

On Friday, CAM Raleigh blooms with new exhibits, including Anne Lindberg's thread sculpture, The Long Sun; a textile and print show by English fashion designer Zandra Rhodes; and a selection of fashion illustrations by Ann Thaden. But you'll also want to put in an appearance the night before, when dance artist Justin Tornow and visual artist Heather Gordon add a new item to their long series of innovative cross-genre collaborations. Tornow's solo, Penumbra, was created in dialogue with Gordon and her installation, And Then the Sun Swallowed Me, whose optically energizing black-tape drawing and projections leave CAM's main gallery on the fourth of February. Developed while Tornow traveled in Germany, Amsterdam, and Finland last fall, the dance piece manifests the human element that is latent in all of Gordon's deceptively abstract visual origami. Penumbra illustrates the line between "light and dark, transparency and obscurity, visibility and invisibility" with Tornow's jagged, Merce Cunningham-infused choreography. —Brian Howe
