Justin Robinson & the Mary Annettes CD release

When: Sat., Feb. 25, 9:30 p.m. 2012

It's always a bit of a surprise and an adjustment when a great player leaves a successful band; in the case of Justin Robinson, who left the Carolina Chocolate Drops last year, the move was about as expected as it was jarring. The African-American string band and ad hoc historical advocacy society had just won a Grammy, sure, but Robinson had long been restless, tinkering with a solo project that put some of his old-time instrumental skills to use in a bright fusion of indie pop and hip-hop. Now with his Mary Annettes, he offers charmingly neurotic, sweetly sung couplets over a pastel instrumental canvas. Their debut LP, Bones for Tinder, is one of the more curious listens of this young year. —Grayson Currin
