JULIAN SANDS: A CELEBRATION OF HAROLD PINTER

BALDWIN AUDITORIUM, DURHAM

FRIDAY, OCT. 2

Accomplished stage and screen actor Julian Sands is forthright in a video for the London Telegraph: "Harold [Pinter] is best known to the world as a playwright. But it's my belief that had he only revealed himself as a poet, his reputation as a writer for his times, for all times, would be colossal and enduring." Strong words indeed about a man whose dramas, including The Birthday Party, The Caretaker and Betrayal, won him the Nobel Prize for literature in 2005. In this solo show, directed by John Malkovich, Sands continues a duty he performed for the ailing writer that same year, when he subbed for Pinter at a benefit reading in London. The show isn't an impersonation; Sands' biographical account of meeting and working with the author threads through half a century's worth of Pinter's verse. Still, when Sands performs works such as "Cancer Cells," The New York Times notes, "You feel the playwright's presence." 8 p.m., $10$38, 1336 Campus Drive, Durham, 919-684-4444,
