Sometimes, everything down to the last detail goes wrong. Many a kid who's experienced this has learned that it's not so bad in the grand scheme of things via Judith Viorst's classic story. Her best-known book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, chronicles, well, exactly what it says on the tin. Viorst took inspiration from her family, naming Alexander and his brothers after her own three sons. The book also spawned a series of books focusing on Alexander, one of which centered around his wonderful, marvelous, excellent, terrific 90 days. (Presumably, those three months rid Alexander of the desire to move to Australia.) Viorst's appearance inaugurates Bookmarked!, a reading festival co-sponsored by Lucy's Book Club and the Lucy Daniels Center. —Sarah Ewald
