Jude the Obscure, Part 1

When: April 12-May 5 2012
Price: $5-20

It's doubly commendable that local theater troupes are producing original musical theater, and that they are tackling material as difficult as Thomas Hardy's mind-numbingly depressing classic, Jude the Obscure. The two-part project from writer Ian Finley, with music and lyrics by Bruce Benedict, Jerome Davis and Jonathan Fitts, has the potential to be either brilliant or the bleakest bleak thing that ever bleaked. Here is a potential opening number: "They call me Jude the Obscure/ What I want, I'm not sure/ Marriage ain't for this man/ But cousin-loving is grand/ In my heart I know it's pure." We also support potential musical adaptations of such works as Glengarry Glen Ross, Nevil Shute's On the Beach, and pretty much anything by Hubert Selby Jr. (Last Exit to Brooklyn, Requiem for a Dream). The play opens with Part 1 on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Performances continue Thursdays–Sundays through May 5, with Parts 1 and 2 alternating dates and times during the run. —Zack Smith
