Durham will be the second-to-last stop on the Afro-Cuban All Stars' 2013 U.S. tour, which has gone from Anchorage to San Francisco to New York, dotting the West Coast, Southwest and Northeast. The 15-piece band descends from the Buena Vista Social Club, the '90s group with which Juan de Marcos Gonzaléz first scored international fame. The All Stars still perform traditional Cuban son with modern flair, but they are now largely stocked with Cubans living abroad—bassist Alberto Pantaleón is based in Mexico City, sonero Evelio Galán in Helsinki. Different from years past, the horn section relies solely on trumpets and flugels for its firepower; gone are trombones, replaced with bass clarinet and keyboard played by de Marcos' daughters, Laura Lydia and Gliceria González. The trumpets team Yoanny Pino and Lázaro Oviedo with Julito Padrón, whose old-school sound hearkens back to the "laughing trumpet" of Chappottín. The lead vocal trio remains unchanged, featuring the richly warbling Galán, the businesslike smooth of Emilio Suarez and the youthful charisma of José Gil "Gilito" Piñera. There's no skimping in the rhythm section, either. Gabriel Hernández's piano and de Marcos' tres guitar add to this powerhouse dance band's traditional flavor. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
