JPhono1, Sour Notes, Gabe Smiley

When: Wed., Aug. 8, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: Free

The image on the cover of Jphono1's Living Is Easy—an astronaut riding a horse—is the same one that appears on a few North Elementary albums and constantly in the visual art of John Harrison. It's fitting, then, that Jphono1 expands the spacey aesthetic Harrison explores with his main band. Here, his ethereal techniques are painted with a mostly acoustic brush, simple instrumentation layered with effects and overdubs until it feels huge. Houston's Sour Notes are far less subtle, with brash pop-rock detonations steeped in '60s psychedelia. It only increases their explosiveness. Gabe Smiley opens the free show at 8 p.m. —Jordan Lawrence
