Joyce Manor, Des Ark, The Exquisites, Places to Hide

When: Fri., Sept. 19, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $10-$12
For a pop-punk record, Joyce Manor’s third and best album, Never Hungover Again, features remarkably few palm-muted power chords. Even as they swap buzzsaw riffs for Johnny Marr drift, their spry and succinct songs are loaded with caffeinated hooks, shaded by post-adolescent ennui and framed on shout-at-the stage choruses. They’re also thoughtful, textured and dynamic. Like a male-fronted Swearin’, Joyce Manor refuses to double down on the genre’s teenage tropes. Instead, they offer a hopeful—and relentlessly hooky—vision of how pop-punk can grow up without dwelling on its past. —Bryan Reed
