Joyce Manor, Cheap Girls, Tracks

When: Thu., Sept. 24, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $15
A year ago, Joyce Manor frontman Barry Johnson made a habit of pausing mid-song to publicly shame gorillas who’d injured female audience members by hurling themselves from the stage. Various scene-guardian types went apeshit, as though caring for the safety of fans were anathema to the spirit of punk. The tension computes, as Joyce Manor’s suburban emo stretches the boundaries of punk and subverts its tropes with a perfect mix of maturity and immaturity. Its stylistically comprehensive music has made the Torrance, California, quartet, essential. Just no stage-diving, OK? —Patrick Wall
