Jordi Savall & Hespèrion XXI with Carlos Núñez: Celtic Universe

When: Sun., April 29, 7 p.m. 2018
Price: $20-$48

By the third century BCE, large swaths of the Iberian Peninsula were dominated by Celtic tribes, particularly in the region now known as Galicia; after centuries of Roman domination, a small contingent of Celts settled in the region in the sixth century CE. We don't know much about either group; much of those cultures has been lost to history. But music is one of the few places where residual echoes are thought to persist. In this concert, viola da gamba master Jordi Savall and his Hespèrion XXI ensemble team up with Carlos Nuñez, a virtuoso of the gaita (a kind of Galician bagpipe), and his group to explore the wide-ranging, unexpected history of Celtic music. Over the course of seven short sets, the six players bring to life traditional Irish reels, Scottish laments, a book of seventeenth-century gamba songs, tunes from Galicia, Brittany, and Basque Country, and more. —Dan Ruccia
