Jonathan Richman

When: Sat., Feb. 16, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $12-15

He's been performing under his own name for most of his career, but Jonathan Richman perseveres with the burden of his influence as the frontman of The Modern Lovers. That cult-favorite, proto-punk outfit established Richman's singular songwriting perspective. He took an unaffected and observant approach to lyrics often described as "childlike" and set them to a steady, sparse backing reminiscent of The Velvet Underground, his idols. The Modern Lovers' songs have been covered by no lesser figures than David Bowie, Iggy Pop, John Cale and Siouxie & the Banshees. Richman's solo career has produced a varied and idiosyncratic catalog, ranging from country to Latin, cementing his reputation as a righteous experimenter. —Bryan C. Reed
