Jonathan Richman with Tommy Larkins

When: Fri., Oct. 30, 9:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $5
Before the Velvet Underground reached the pantheon of influential bands, it was down to acolytes like Jonathan Richman to proclaim the band’s primal brilliance. Indeed, Richman’s early songs with the Modern Lovers packed a visceral punch that owed much to Lou and company. In the spirit of his idols, his subject matter was iconoclastic. But the attitude didn’t last long. By the early 1980s, Richman had turned wistful, writing songs about chewing gum wrappers, Jan Vermeer and “that summer feeling.” Still, he’s never lost his love for “the rockin’ modern neon sound,” and even in this intimate setting, he can bring it. —David Klein
