It would be inaccurate to call tenor saxophonist Jon Irabagon unfocused, but the 2008 winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition hardly restricts himself to a singular style, either. Irabagon made his mark as an adventurous avant-garde experimentalist in the whimsical quartet Mostly Other People Do the Killing, a side he's continued to explore with his Outrageous! act. But 2009's The Observer stuck to more traditional post-bop interpretations. Tellingly, Irabagon's collaborators range from Herbie Hancock and Wynton Marsalis to Michael Bublé and Lou Reed. He's joined in this trio by organist Alex Smith and drummer Shawn Baltazor. Tickets are $7–$10 for the 9 p.m. show presented by The Art of Cool Project. —Spencer Griffith
